Pia Wurtzbach from Philippines wins Miss Universe 2015

26-year-old Pia Wurtzbach from Philippines was crowned Miss Universe 2015. The pageant was held in Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. Pia defeated 79 other delegates to be crowned by the outgoing queen, Paulina Vega from Colombia.

The Pageant became controversial when the host, Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Colombia’s Ariadna Gutiérrez as the winner whereas she was the first runner-up. Miss USA Olivia Jordan was crowned as  the second runner-up. Miss Australia -Monika Radulovic & Miss France-Flora Coquerel completed the top 5. Miss Thailand-Aniporn Chalermburanawong bagged the best National Costume award

When asked why should you be crowned as the next Miss Universe? Pia answered, “To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility. If i were to be Miss Universe i will use my voice to influence the youth, and i would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness that is timely and relevant to my country which is the Philippines. I want to show the world, the universe rather, that i am confidently beautiful with a heart.”

It was 42 years ago when the Philippines won its last Miss Universe and Pia is the 3rd woman from her country to win the coveted beauty title. The other winners from the Philippines are Gloria Diaz, the country’s first Miss Universe in 1969 and second, Maria Margarita “Margie” Moran in 1973.
